ABOUT
Kwak Chul-an studied wood and furniture design at Hongik University and Contextual Design at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands, and is currently a professor in the Department of Living Arts at Sangmyung University. Kwak’s work is held by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and Kwak was selected for Hyundai Motor Group’s Brilliant 30 in 2015 and Korea Tomorrow in 2014. Kwak is a multi-talented artist, ranging from furniture designer to “art furniture,” which combines furniture design and art. Kwak has mainly used plywood and, recently enjoying the potential of the material and its expansion into the painterly, uses resin as well. Kwak realizes the object to be made in 3D, unfolds it to extract a drawing, has a manufacturer cut plywood to the drawing, and joins the planes like origami, visualizing in three dimensions the trajectory of movement unfolding in space, so that the work also occupies a place. Kwak explores the relationship and communication between space, people and art, and endlessly seeks expansion into new boundaries by giving artistry to the material of plywood.
